ABOUT SMILO

Gobingca is a Durban based filmmaker and Writer. He recently Graduated Summa Cum Laude for an BA Honors degree in Media & Cultural Studies from the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa. He is also a Journalism graduate from the then Durban Institute of Technology, where he received a Special Award for his achievements.

At the moment, Gobingca is reading for Master of Arts in Media & Cultural Studies, exploring the sub-cultural landscape in the city of Durban, South Africa - through a documentary film titled A Tale of Two Pubs.

He has worked in the Film & Television Industry for over 10 years. He has worked with different formats, long and short, fiction and non-fiction. He has also spent time developing advocacy and corporate videos for NGO’s and for Government departments. He has worked as a Producer, Writer, Director, Editor and DOP.

Gobingca has also worked as a broadcast Journalist and content producer for the SABC.

Gobingca’s interest is in the story of African Youth in recently liberated urban spaces. His first film Sins of the Inner-City (SABC 2006) whilst remembering 30 years of JUNE 16, 1976; also chronicled the strife of young South Africans and Africans in the post-apartheid South African urban-sphere. The film showed at the DURBAN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 2007, RIALTO FILM FESTIVAL 2007 and other platforms. In 2012 Gobingca made his first Micro-Budget feature titled ZOID under full commission from the Multi-Choice Chanel MZANSI MAGIC. Gobingca has also participated in a number of industry and skills development programs, notably the inaugural Durban Talent Campus (DIFF) in 2008, the Durban Producer’s Lab in 2010 and SEDIBA 2015. He is currently among the first five recipients of a feature film development grant from the Durban Film Office, which he is currently penning.

Gobingca is also one of the founders of the Durban film Society, which through its projects has since grown to be a vast database of KZN based professionals and aspirants.
